If you’re wondering whether you should clean your carpet yourself, the answer is yes and no. Keeping your carpet clean is ideally a team effort.
What Can I DIY?
For starters, you don’t want to wait until your carpet looks visibly filthy to clean it. By then it will only take longer—and cost more—to clean it. Maintain your carpet’s cleanliness by vacuuming it often. Aim to vacuum high-traffic areas twice a week and the rest of the carpeting at least once a week. Do at least two slow passes over the high-traffic areas to make sure the vacuum cleaner is collecting all the dirt. One quick pass over less trafficked areas should suffice.
Keep a spot-cleaning kit handy in the event of spills. Stock it with cleaning cloths or paper towels and spray bottles of your preferred cleaning solutions.
Our first suggestion would be to use three spray bottles: one with a mild detergent solution (water mixed with dish soap) for general use; a second bottle with half water, half white vinegar for alkaline spills; and a third bottle with one tablespoon of ammonia mixed with one cup water for acidic spills.
Alternatively, we suggest treating carpet stains with baking soda and vinegar. Pick a method that works for you and keep it on hand. If you act fast, you can remove most stains—and remember to blot, don’t rub!
When Should I Call a Professional?
Carpet manufacturers generally recommend that you have your carpet professionally cleaned once every 12 to 18 months.
An obvious advantage to going straight to the pro’s is that you’ll completely avoid making all of the “rookie mistakes” (like using too much detergent, which leaves the carpet feeling sticky- or too much water, which could possibly lead to mildew). We know that hiring a professional is going to cost more than renting or buying a steam cleaner yourself, but it’s worth recognizing that a professional carpet cleaner has access to equipment—and know-how—that will help them do a better job!
