Everything You Need to Know About Marble Polishing

Marble is a gorgeous material that makes for some of the best looking surfaces in a home. Whether you have marble floors, countertops, vanities or columns, we know you want to keep your marble looking its very best. But marble is also a delicate material, and for a proper clean you’ll need to use the proper materials and cleaning methods. Here’s everything you need to know:

Materials

To properly polish marble, you will need:

  • A mild detergent.

  • A poultice for removing stains.

  • A low-speed polisher with a felt wheel.

  • 3 to 4 soft cloths.

  • A polishing compound.

  • A marble sealant.

If you have cultured marble, make sure your product states that it is for cultured marble.

Marble Polishing

To begin polishing your marble, tape the area around the surface. If you have other surfaces that could be damaged by the products, use painters tape to cover those edges. Then, use the mild detergent and a soft rag to gently clean the marble surface.

Now is where your poultice comes in. If you have stains deep within the porous surface of the marble, polishing the marble will only seal them in forever. Apply the poultice to the stains, and let it sit for 24 hours. Then pour water over the poultice and wipe it away with a soft cloth. Ensure that the area is completely dry before moving on.

Now you’re ready to polish and seal. Apply a small amount of polishing compound according to the container of the product. Use your low-speed polisher in circular motions to work in the polish in small sections. When you’re done, remove the excess polish and finish with a damp cloth. Then wait 24 hours, and you’re ready to apply the sealant. After the sealant has been on the marble for the recommended time, use a soft dry cloth to wipe it off. In 6 to 8 hours your marble should be fully dried, sealed and looking better than ever.
